Today we are talking about the coconut sugar and everyone here has a misunderstanding that it is made up of from coconut. Don’t be misunderstood by this. First, we will understand that what is coconut sugar?
Coconut sugar is made up from the sap of flower buds from the coconut palm tree. The sap is boiled over on moderate heat and the water is being evaporated by this heat. The remaining residue is coconut sugar which is caramel in colour and tastes similar to brown sugar.
Nowadays it is becoming a popular alternative to white sugar due to its flavour. It is perceived that it is more natural, less processed, than table sugar.
In calorie content, both have the same content that means they provide 16 kilocalories per 5 grams.
It has lower glycemic index means that it will not raise your blood sugar levels immediately as compared to white sugar or table sugar.
It only retains a mineral known as potassium but doesn’t count much on anything except sugar in a teaspoon or two.
Nutritionally saying there is no much difference in coconut sugar or table sugar. So yes, you can truthfully say there is a vitamin in coconut sugar in the same way you can say there are vitamins in the fries. Both offer nutrition in trace amounts.
If anyone says that coconut sugar is good for you definitely have biased perception. Yes, it is slightly better for diabetic people as compared to table sugar or corn syrup.
In the end, I would like to say too much of sugar of any type is not good for the health whether it is a coconut, table sugar, maple syrup, honey. All would raise your blood triglycerides levels and lowers your HDL level and contributes to the excess calories in your routine diet.
It was just a marketing strategy to promote the product so choose the things wisely by reading the nutritional facts on the product. Eat sugars sparingly whether it’s a coconut sugar or other sugar.
There is a need of having much research to say it is good or bad.
