Nutrition labels may seem to be complicated but in reality, it is not! Where do you think it is necessary to put on? The nutrition facts are basically placed on the food items in the grocery stores. Now the question arises in your mind why it is important to have food labels as it is not necessary to put on fruits, vegetables? Yes, it is. not necessary to put on fruits and vegetables as these are the exceptional food items. The nutrition labels help in finding the consumer that what is present in a particular food product.
So today in this blog we will be learning about the nutritional label through which you can able to make some healthier choices. We will break the food label from top to bottom in sequence order. Starting with a SERVING SIZE which is at the top of the label. This will give you the information regarding the size of single serving and the total no. of serving. Serving size basically is the amount of food that the nutrition label is based on. This will help you in not taking the extra calories.
Check the total no. of calories. Give attention to the number of calories as it indicates how many calories are in one serving of the food product.
Be aware of the next column i.e. total fat. This provides information regarding the total grams of fat in one serving. This section may be broken down into sub-categories like saturated fats, trans fats, polyunsaturated fats, monounsaturated fats.
Next section will be the nutrient bar which includes total carbohydrates, proteins which indicate the total no. of carbohydrates and proteins in one serving. Carbohydrates section is further divided into 2 sections called as dietary fibre and sugar.
The last nutrient required on the fable is additional vitamins and minerals like vitamin A, C, calcium, zinc and so on. The amount of each vitamin and mineral that are in one serving size of food are listed by the percent of the daily value (% DV) that is in that serving. On the far right side of the nutrition label, you will also see that some of the other nutrients will have the % DV listed.
