Hey friends, you may find this article a little scientific but I tried using simple terms to explain you better. Everyone in their life must have experienced some changes in their life either physical or emotional. These changes occur due to change in the hormones.
Hormones are basically the chemical messengers of our body. They travel through our bloodstream and hold the key of optimum health. These are responsible for the mood swings, metabolism, sexual function, growth and reproduction.
Now let’s have a better understanding of such hormones that have a big effect on our health.
- 1. Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH)
- 2. Insulin
- 3. Cortisol
- 4. Serotonin
- 5. Ghrelin
Now days we commonly heard about this hormone. It is now a very familiar one. It is a hormone which is being secreted by pituitary gland and is present in our brain. This regulates our thyroid gland to produce T3 and T4 hormones. It is essential for the metabolism of every tissue in the body.
Abnormality of this causes weaker metabolism which leads to weight gain, hair fall, dry skin and mood swings and goiter. The abnormality is effectively treated with dietary and lifestyle modification, exercise and regular blood test.
Must have heard that I m on insulin from a diabetic person. Insulin is basically released by the pancreas. It helps to regulate our sugar level in our blood vessels which is basically produced by the carbohydrates. It allows the body to store and utilize glucose for energy.
Abnormality of this hormone cause frequent urination, hungry all the time, increased thirst, delaying in wound healing. When it is released in the blood stream it either causes hypo or hyperglycaemia. Effective treatment is regular check up and lifestyle modification.
This hormone is also known as stress hormone. This hormone is released by adrenal gland which is found above the kidney. It helps us to stay healthy and energetic. Excess secretion of stress hormones leads to anxiety, fatigue, increased heart rate, high blood pressure, high level of cholesterol and so on. The only solution to treat this is sharing your feelings with others, family vacations, spending time with others.
A happy hormone named serotonin is being produced by the brain and the intestines. This hormone relay signals between the nerve cells. It plays an important role in mood and the central nervous system and affects the body. It may affect your bone metabolism, eye health, blood clotting, neurological disorders.
Ghrelin is the hormone that is produced and released by the stomach. It is also known as hunger hormones. It is released into the blood stream producing signal to brain to stimulate food intake and fat deposition. When the level of ghrelin increases, you tend to eat more. The lower your levels, the more you feel full and the easier is to eat less. Therefore if you want to lose weight lowering your ghrelin levels may be beneficial.
I am sure after reading all the five hormones you gets the importance of each one. It is obvious to keep them in balance. Make sure you keep them in check for imbalances with your doctor and lifestyle counsellor.
